Don’t make mountains of molehills

Editor, The recent Courier articles and subsequent opinions concerning the swearing in of elected officials leave me with mixed emotions - one of joy, the other sadness and dismay.

Fiscal-cliff ‘fix’ misses mark

When negotiations began over averting the fiscal cliff, the ultimate goal was supposed to be two-part: addressing tax increases and reducing the deficit.

It is up to officials to unite the county

Editor, Citizens of Liberty County, thank you for your support, prayers and work during my term as president of the Liberty County Branch of the YMCA. To Cameron: Thanks for reminding us what matters

Dear Cameron Charles Yarbrough: During the years, it has been a tradition at the first of the year to impart some words of wisdom in this space to your father, uncle and cousins, who double as my grandsons. Perhaps some of my observations were useful to them. Maybe some fell on deaf ears. I have never asked. Anyway, they are adults now, old enough and wise enough (I hope) to figure things out for themselves. So now it's just you and me, kid.

Making a career of label reading

I've recently become a serious label reader. Previously while grocery shopping, I'd glance at the data on the back of food packages to make sure the item I was about to purchase didn't contain an entire day's worth of fat, or I'd do a quick comparison to determine which brand of granola bars contained fewer calories. But since my baby girl began eating solid food, I've pretty much made a career out of studiously inspecting every scrap of nutritional information I can get my hands on.

Raising minimum wage will lift the economy

As a longtime businessman, I see a deficit in America that has received far too little attention. That's the wage deficit experienced by growing numbers of Americans, with serious consequences for our economy.

Dual ceremonies show racial divide

Editor, This is in reference to the two articles on the swearing-in of our elected officials. It has been said that a picture is worth a thousand words. What does Friday's article "Sheriff, other elected officials sworn into office for new terms," which ran with a picture of white elected officials, versus Sunday's article, "Liberty County's leaders take oaths, begin new terms," which ran with a picture of black elected officials and two white females, show us?

Gilliard had always planned to attend nighttime swearing-in ceremony

Editor, In reference to the story in last Sunday's Courier ("Dual ceremonies stir emotions"), a source for the story said that I'd planned to be sworn in earlier along with my colleagues, Commissioners Walden and Bowen, but that's not the case. At our regular December commission meeting, Commissioner Walden mentioned to me that he had plans to visit with his son during the holidays, and he was considering being sworn in before the planned date of Dec, 27. During a conversation before the December mid-month meeting, Walden asked whether I'd be interested in being sworn in ...

Replace Georgia’s broken medical-tort system

When the governor paints the state's financial picture as "daunting" and Medicaid is at least $700 million in the red, you know it's time to get serious about the state budget.

Goats could be answer to economic issues

My work never ends. Not only do I have to deal with compound verb forms each and every week, the editors insist I throw in some commas along the way for reasons I don't fully understand. I think commas are a nuisance and only serve to get in the way of great thoughts.

It’s easy to get wrapped up in life and miss the best parts

I usually don't like Christmas. Now, before I offend anyone, let me make it perfectly clear that it's the commercialization and the added family stress that leave a bad taste in my mouth. The celebration of Jesus' birth is - and should be -the focal point of the holiday.

Midway needs to enforce laws or just change them

I want to welcome the new Family Dollar store to Midway. For those who have yet to visit the store, it is very attractive and the shelves are well-stocked. Some of you are upset that the store missed its announced grand opening. It was not the company's fault. The city failed to issue its business license in a timely manner, even though the company filed the paperwork in plenty of time.
