It’s important to brave the awkward

Breast cancer ranks pretty low on my list of favorite things to talk about. If I'm being honest, it doesn't even make the list.

Country needs a president who will hold true to country’s foundation

Editor, Let's knock off this foolish pettiness and start talking about what this country needs: jobs, legal immigration, a strong military, a government that believes in and follows the Constitution, a government that believes in the separation of church and state, a government that believes in the sanctity of marriage between a man and a woman, and - above all - a government that believes that we are a great nation, indivisible under God.

The old saying is true: It’s not easy being green

I, more than anyone on Earth, realize that I am very unknowing and, for the most part, lackadaisical when it comes to being passionate about the world's greenery.

Families make many sacrifices during times of deployment

As many families are out choosing Halloween costumes and trying to decide how to decorate pumpkins, others in our community are preparing to say goodbye to their soldiers for nine to 12 months. While this is really nothing new to Liberty County - our heroes have been deploying for more than 10 years, since the beginning of the war - each time is poignant and offers a new opportunity to wish our soldiers farewell and to support family members left behind in what surely is a trying time.

School’s new rule is questionable

Both my daughters attend a local elementary school. We are a military family and moved from Washington state to this area at the end of May. My husband deployed Aug. 15. My daughters are 7 and 5 years old, and my 5-year-old started kindergarten in August. That's a lot of big changes in my 5-year-old daughter's life, so the first few weeks of the school year, I went almost every day to have lunch with her. The last couple of weeks, I've gone maybe once or twice.

Superintendents-association head refutes pro-charter claims

With the vote on the charter-school amendment about a month away, the heat is getting intense. I know; I have felt it. I wrote a column a few weeks ago giving the pro-charter folks an opportunity to make their case for the amendment. For my trouble, a number of anti-charter advocates wondered if I was going soft on them, and backers of the bill continued to accuse me of giving out "misinformation."

Operation Fast and Furious flop ignored public safety

The Justice Department's internal investigation of the debacle known as "Operation Fast and Furious," a poorly thought-out and worse-executed federal gun program that resulted in the death of a U.S. border agent and 1,400 guns still illegally on the street, has resulted in the retirement and resignation of two senior Justice officials.
