Visit, don’t just drive through

Imagine holding hands with someone special, strolling down a boardwalk late in the afternoon at Cay Creek Wetlands Interpretive Center as the tide moves in. Trees tower above, shading you as you leisurely wander above and next to ponds that cover the marsh some days and expose tree roots other days.

A salute to those who saluted a winning team

Editor, On behalf of our nonprofit, Seven Ministries of Liberty County, I thank the community for the support of our AAU National Champion South Georgia Kings 13 and under boys basketball team. Winning a national title is about as big as it gets and recognizing the accomplishments of these young men was the least we could do.

Thanks to Hinesville for assistance in time of family crisis

Editor, This is a thank-you note to the residents and officials of your wonderful town of Hinesville. This letter is long overdue, but there is not a day that passes that I do not remember the many kindnesses shown to me when, on March 22, my husband died behind the wheel of our car in Liberty County while traveling from Florida to Philadelphia.

There’s fun outside those four walls

I'm an indoor person. When I feel adventurous, I pick up a book or watch a movie on cable rather than the usual news and food channels. I occasionally go on three-mile "hikes," but that just means four laps around the circle in my neighborhood.

The commissioner of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources says he does not immediately foresee the state making deeper cuts to the operational budgets of its parks and historic sites. His department, like all state agencies, has complied with budget reductions requested by the governor, snipping functions and programs here and there.

Sequestration could have catastrophic effects on Hinesville, local community

On Jan. 2, 2013, our city may experience an event that will have negative economic impacts on the community for years to come. Other communities with military installations will experience the same or similar negative impacts because of sequestration. Sequestration is a term that generally means seizure. In this case, though, it means additional budget cuts in the federal budget for the next 10 years. According to Sen. Saxby Chambliss, who recently participated in a news conference at MidCoast Regional Airport near Fort Stewart, our city and surrounding areas could see the immediate loss of approximately 7,000 jobs. The ...
