Soulmate memories haunt Claire Paletta

Loneliness lasts. It never completely goes away. It is the one emotion that seems to make its way into the hearts of almost every man and woman sometime during a lifetime. Sure, it can be masked. Other people and interests partially fill the void, but now and then loneliness seems to find its way back when least expected.

Time to lower rhetoric, start healing

Have we gone totally, completely insane? It is not bad enough that the specter of Islamic terrorism hangs over us like a toxic cloud. Now we have a sniper in Dallas killing five police officers and wounding seven others because, according to Dallas police Chief David Brown, he reportedly wanted to kill white people in retaliation for the death of two black people in Minnesota and Louisiana by white police officers.

Conserve precious water

Nothing is more satisfying than a cold glass of water when it is hot, like it has been in recent days. But what if you did not have running water or a fridge? What if the nearest water was more than a mile away and was in a stream filled with water-borne bacteria that could make you very sick?

Support tax relief for wounded veterans

Editor, I urge you to support Senate Bill 2712, the Combat-Injured Veterans Tax Fairness Act of 2016, introduced by Sen. John Boozman, R-Ark., and co-sponsored by Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va. Service members who have been separated from the armed forces due to combat-related injuries sustained while serving are to receive a tax-exempt, one-time lump-sum disability severance payment. However, the Department of Defense has been taxing this payment and must be held accountable to stop this action and identify and notify those who have been affected, allowing the veterans to reclaim that which was improperly withheld.

Vote no on Opportunity School District

In November, voters will decide whether the Georgia Constitution should be amended to allow Gov. Nathan Deal to create the Opportunity School District, or OSD. This proposed state takeover of struggling, high-poverty schools uses scores from the College and Career Ready Performance Index, or CCRPI, to justify the power grab. The CCRPI derives its scores primarily from student performance on standardized tests. If you've kept abreast of the issue, you know that standardized testing in Georgia has earned low marks for reliability. We also know that low test scores are, more than anything, a direct reflection of poverty in ...

Helen Walker loves to scream 'bingo!'

With the news surrounding Sarah Hyden-Smith, first female pastor in Lennox Valley, and Raymond Cooper's conversion at the Lutheran church, one might think the other churches on the town square took a back seat during the summer of 1998. But the good Lord works in mysterious ways, and during the summer of '98, it was truer in the Valley than in most places.

We can brag about our state parks

I am late getting to this subject with summer whizzing along, but not so much so that we can't still squeeze it in the state of Georgia's brag book, along with Vidalia onions, St. Simons sunsets, rainbow trout and Ray Charles Robinson. I am talking about our state parks.
