Senate goes through longest day of session

Day 26 (Monday, Feb. 27): The week begins with the second meeting of the Governor's Higher Education Funding Commission, a committee that I co-chair with Rep. Carl Rogers, chairman of the House Higher Education Committee. The commission is charged with examining how the funding formulas for the university system and technical college system should be changed in order to improve higher education outcomes in the state. We have four bills on the calendar as we go into session today, including House Bill 800, which expands eligibility so that a candidate with five years' service in any federally recognized component ...

Will anyone take Midway ticket challenge?

Editor, The Coastal Courier graciously published my previous letter to the editor wherein I challenged anyone to produce a speeding ticket issued by a Midway Police Department officer for going 5 miles per hour or less over the posted speed limit. The prize was a $50 gift certificate for Red Lobster or Olive Garden restaurants. The 30-day window has passed and no one has produced the winning ticket. This would tend to indicate that either there is no credence to the claims in Sound off that tickets have been issued for driving 5 mph or less over the speed limit ...

Not just Congress has room for improvement

As a member of Congress, you get used to being graded. Interest groups send you questionnaires, check your voting record, and then issue their "report cards." Editorial writers opine freely on your performance. Pollsters issue monthly updates on how Congress is faring with the public.

Think outside the oil barrel for transportation

President Barack Obama's call for Congress to end some $4 billion in subsidies for oil companies may or may not lower the price of gas. But it has a certain appeal at a time when Americans are feeling the pressure of rapidly rising gas costs while those same oil companies are making enormous profits.

Financial troubles grew from Community Reinvestment Act

Editor, In reading various articles in the newspapers or magazines over the years about the foreclosure of many citizens' homes, none of the articles mention that President Obama helped to perpetuate these sub prime loan as far back as 1992.

Ludowici, Long should address pay issue

Editor, The Long County Press recently published an article about Nancy McKnew attending the Long County Commission meeting to address the issues concerning Long County Board of Elections Chairwoman Vanessa Cunningham. Commission Chairman Bobby Walker said the matter is under investigation. That was at least the third time this same issue has been brought up at a commission meeting and there definitely is a problem.

Protecting Ogeechee makes more than just environmental sense

It's easy to get mad over the way the Ogeechee River has been treated, first by King America, then by state authorities. Dumping by King America in 2011 caused the worst fish kill in the river in memory, and the state's Environmental Protection Division responded with what amounts to a slap on the wrist.
