Johnson: Policing is the No. 1 issue

Recently, I was privileged to lead a forum on race relations and policing at the River Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Columbus with Mayor Teresa Tomlinson and moderated by retired Chief Superior Court Judge John Allen. It was broadcast live by the ABC and FOX affiliates and several radio stations in Columbus and Atlanta instead of the evening news. Community leaders, subject experts and citizens who are affected by and deeply engaged in these issues were on hand to discuss where the community and our nation are, and how we might go forward.

Just like we "grow" our children by the love and care we give them, we also can "grow" a great neighborhood to live in by giving it the attention it needs to thrive. Great neighborhoods don't just happen. It takes a united group to make a neighborhood special. Often a neighborhood is pulled together by one leader who energizes neighbors into action.

It feels good to come home to Hallmark

As a child, I was captivated by emotional stories and how words strung together had the power to make me feel happy, touched, sad or inspired. The rudiments of my education came around the kitchen table or in the car as I listened to Mama's and Daddy's storytelling.

It's our turn to defend them

The state of Georgia has been blessed with many pivotal military champions. The Russell Senate Office Building, one of only six legislative offices buildings in our nation's capital, is named after a Winder native who was a military advocate of historic importance. Milledgeville's Carl Vinson, or the "Father of the Two-Ocean Navy," is one of only two non-presidents to have an aircraft carrier named after him. Sam Nunn is a living legend and has been a dominant voice for our military for decades. President Jimmy Carter was a graduate of the Naval Academy and a submarine officer who ...
