Learn from Kansas

One of the most compelling political stories of the past week happened not in Washington, D.C. but out to the west in Kansas.

Thanks for community support

Editor: On behalf of the board of directors of Seven Ministries of Liberty County, Inc., I would like to once again thank the community for supporting the Jackie Gilliard-Henderson Memorial Scholarship Walk-A-Thon. This was our seventh year and one of the best ever. The 150 or so participants included a lot of new faces and we're thankful that everyone came to support this worthy cause. The funds raised awards scholarships to public high school seniors in Liberty County that plan to further their education as well as helps support our other charitable endeavors.

People NEATen neighborhoods

In my job I get to hang out with some pretty neat people. Particularly, volunteer leaders, who are not only neat, but who work to make their neighborhoods neat. They make their neighborhoods the best they can be.

What to do when attacked on the job?

I've wrestled with this my entire career: What do journalists do immediately after we're attacked while lawfully doing our jobs? It takes place on occasion. In this age of Donald Trump, it's happening more. Our president has turned long-simmering bad feelings about media into boiling hatred. We can consider the reasons in a moment, but the reality is that the nutcases are emboldened as never before to physically attack those who cover news in ways they don't like.

Climate fears unhealthy

On June 1 came the encouraging news that President Trump has decided the United States will exit the U.N. Paris climate agreement. The agreement imposes huge burdens while producing little or no impact on the global climate.

Give our climate a higher priority

Claims being made about the need to protect U.S. jobs and prosperity by rejecting the climate-change issue are completely unfounded. In fact, there are now more than eight times more jobs in climate-friendly clean energy (wind, solar, etc.) than in coal.
