Midway needs to enforce laws or just change them

I want to welcome the new Family Dollar store to Midway. For those who have yet to visit the store, it is very attractive and the shelves are well-stocked. Some of you are upset that the store missed its announced grand opening. It was not the company's fault. The city failed to issue its business license in a timely manner, even though the company filed the paperwork in plenty of time.

Politicians will pick up where Mayans left off

I was hoping that, for once, the Mayans would be right about something and that the world would have ended on Dec. 21 as they had said it would.

School slaughter presents tough questions for lawmakers

Caution: Stick-family on board

Those little stick-figure families plastered to the back windshields of SUVs and minivans annoy me. Who cares if you have three kids who enjoy wearing Mickey Mouse ears, two dogs and a cat? Not me. From what I gather, I'm not alone on this.

Judge clears way for police to check for undocumented immigrants

Those seeking stronger enforcement of this country's laws against illegal immigration - which is long overdue - can take heart from a decision this week by U.S. District Judge Tom Thrash in Atlanta and, prior to that, a decision by the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

The labor battles in Michigan

Michigan gave birth to the United Auto Workers. The union was founded at a convention in Detroit in 1935. After its famous sit-down strike in 1937 in Flint, Mich., the UAW won recognition by General Motors and, in the next several years, by Chrysler and Ford. It was the advent of an era of industrial unionization that may be coming to a symbolic end in the same place it started.

Season is for hope, renewal, redemption

There seems to be a lot wrong with the world today. Just in recent weeks, the deranged among us have killed our children en masse and individually. Our business and political leaders seem to be unable to represent our best interests.

Make road grant money available for all

There are some 20,000 miles of federal and state highways in Georgia - the interstate system and major roads that link our cities one to the other, carry our commuters to and from employment centers, and give structure to our thriving logistics industry and interstate commerce.

Parents and children from all types of families need to ‘play’

The differentiation between stay-at-home moms and working moms may not be as pronounced these days as it has been in the past, but I do believe it still is alive and well. I don't think either group works hard to keep this barrier in place; it just seems to exist due to different lifestyle habits, schedules and family routines.
