Husbands need a little TLC, too

While I was back in Iowa over the holidays, a friend of mine told me about a tradition she and her husband had developed for bonding after each child's birth. Once the new baby had reached around 3 months of age, they would leave the baby, along with their other children, with her parents and go for a couple's weekend to regroup in their marriage. At the time, and even still, the idea of leaving my baby behind for a weekend seemed outrageous.

Courts, colleges come before lawmakers

Day 6 (Monday, Jan. 23): After a long weekend, we're back in session today. We got right to work debating two bills. HB46, the Uniform Interstate Depositions and Discovery Act, will streamline discovery in cases involving out-of-state decisions by allowing depositions and discovery taken in other states to be admissible in Georgia courts. While HB46 passes easily, SB203, a bill that was passed by the Senate last year but had changes made by the House, didn't make it through the Senate. The bill now will go back to the House, where members will either accept the bill as-is ...

Midway Police deserve respect

Ludowici's new officials revert to old tactics

Editor, Jan. 17, 2012, the first meeting of the new city council was held. I will be using names and only because the newspapers will have articles that do. My view point is from the audience. I apologize ahead of time to the innocent family members of this council.

On politics, journalists, special birthday girl

State Sen. Tommie Williams, R-Lyons, one of our two unelected lieutenant governors - Chip Rogers, R-Woodstock, is the other - sent out a puff piece taking much credit for authoring a bill to require local school boards to consider a teacher's "effectiveness," not seniority, when getting rid of teachers.

Perception of time is in eye of beholder

It's funny how the perception of time so easily plays tricks on our minds. One day the azaleas are just starting to bloom around town, a sure sign that spring is eminent, then next day you're rushing to get your Christmas shopping list finished in time. One day you're in complete disbelief that you might be pregnant, the next you're tying up loose ends at work before taking maternity leave.

Current primary system favors rich, not voters

Editor, Attack politics, both inter- and intraparty, are as old as this republic. United States history, however, repeatedly demonstrates that what one chooses to attack has often been the bane of the attacker as well as the attacked.

TSPLOST about more than sales tax

Editor, The governor and the General Assembly are attempting to change the time-honored Georgia Constitution, whereas counties are the local constituted authorities for governmental operations, and pass that authority to a regional roundtable. The General Assembly and the governor want to add another layer of government - not elected - called the regional roundtables.
