Area students made the dean's list for fall 2010 at the Georgia Institute of Technology:
The Liberty County Board of Education approved master renovation plans for a fine arts building and also made a decision on the location of the Career Academy during Tuesday evening's meeting.
Applications are being taken for the Rita Ackerman Scholarship. The scholarship was created specifically to be awarded to the spouse of any enlisted service member, either active duty or retired.
The Liberty County Pre-K Center makes reading a priority. On Thursday, the center hosted its first of four literacy series sessions, which are designed to encourage parents to help their children to become better readers.
State School Superintendent Dr. John Barge named 868 Georgia Title I Distinguished Schools and four Title I Distinguished Districts at a recent state board of education meeting.
On Jan. 21, Midway Middle School recognized students who excelled academically for the second nine-week grading period. There were 17 students on the "A" honor roll and 160 students on the "A/B" honor roll. The Rev. Doug Walker, pastor of Midway United Methodist Church, talked to students during the ceremony about being grateful for the educators who assist them with their scholastic achievements.
Nancy Probst's sixth-grade social studies class at Midway Middle School worked throughout January on multi-tiered projects. After doing in-class lessons and watching videos about the Cuban Revolution and the Zapatista movement in Mexico, students met in the media center with media specialist Cristina Dover to review research methods. They researched and put together news scripts on their chosen topics.
Students from Long County High School's Future Business Leaders of America club attended the Region 3 Leadership Conference on Jan. 20 in Jesup.
On Jan. 20, Bradwell Institute Future Business Leaders of America members traveled to Altamaha Technical College in Jesup for the FBLA Region 3 Leadership Conference. Competitive events consisted of online testing and/or performance events. Bradwell Institute members earned 12 Region 3 awards; seven students advanced to the FBLA State Leadership Conference, which will be March 17-20 in Atlanta.
Walker Middle School students Halayna Klassen and Emily Carden recently were chosen to play with the Armstrong Atlantic Youth Orchestra in Savannah. WMS band director Myron Grimes said the two eighth-graders were selected from a group of 120 students.
