LES has TV station's 'Top Teacher'

Liberty Elementary School's gifted class teacher, Lela Dickens, was recognized as a WTOC top teacher in September. Dickens said she always tries to go above and beyond to ensure her students are learning at high levels. She gives personal attention to each student and makes certain her teaching style fits the needs of each pupil.

Writing contest at library for youth

Live Oak Public Libraries are accepting entries for the 2010 Young Writers Contest. Entry deadline is Wednesday, Oct. 20. The contest is open to children in grades kindergarten through college. Students are asked to write a poem using five words selected from the books of the authors and illustrators in this year's Savannah Children's Book Festival. BI JROTC installs leaders

The Bradwell Institute Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps Program held its 18th annual commissioning/promotion ceremony on Thursday, Sept. 16, in the JROTC multi-purpose room. Cadet leaders for the 2010-11 school year were installed. Sgt. Maj. Julio Baez, the sergeant major for 6th Brigade, Cadet Command, was the guest speaker. He also administered the oath of office to the cadets.

Liberty youth at Georgia summit

The fifth Biennial Georgia Youth Summit was held at the Rock Eagle 4-H Center in Eatonton on Sept. 11-13. The three-day leadership conference was attended by 716 youth and adults from 133 counties. The summit is designed to increase awareness of state and local issues, enhance youth-adult partnerships on the local level and encourage youth to become active for the betterment of their communities.

Parents treated to breakfast with students

Joseph Martin Elementary's recent "Muffins for Mom" event was a success, JME Principal Sue Tolley said. At 7:15 a.m. Friday, students began to pass through the serving line with their parents, grandparents and guardians. Staff members greeted the families and served juice, coffee and muffins.
