Regents approve tuition hikes up to 16%

ATLANTA - Georgia college students will pay up to $1,000 more in tuition in the coming school year under hikes passed by the state Board of Regents on Tuesday, a move that comes amid one of the worst state fiscal crises in recent history.

The tuition increases for the state's 35 public colleges and universities hit hardest at research universities: Georgia Tech, the University of Georgia and Georgia State University. Many students will pay $3,535 per semester, a 16 percent increase over last fall.

ATLANTA - Georgia college students likely will find out Tuesday how much more they'll have to shell out for tuition this fall.

The Georgia Board of Regents is scheduled to vote on tuition hikes for the state's 35 public colleges and universities. The vote comes after lawmakers cut hundreds of millions from higher education coffers to help balance the books amid one of the worst state fiscal crises in recent history.

The Liberty County School System will offer a kindergarten transition camp this summer at each elementary school. All students who are registered for kindergarten for the next school year will have the opportunity to participate in the free program.

BI students selected for state chorus

Six Bradwell Institute Chorus students were selected to sing in the 2010 Georgia All-State Chorus. The students passed two singing auditions, which included an art song solo, scales, tonal memory and sight-singing.

The Liberty County High School FFA group attended the Georgia State FFA Convention on April 22-24. Members performed community service by participating in the Rebuilding Macon House Painting Project.

SGMS students raise Pennies for Patients

One million People in the United States, many of them children, have a blood cancer such as leukemia or lymphoma. During February, Snelson-Golden Middle School participated in a fundraiser led by the National Junior Honor Society called "Pennies for Patients" to raise money for cancer research through the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

JBE students, parents clean up campus

Jordye Bacon Elementary School had its campus clean-up day March 6. More than 130 community residents pitched in to help with spring cleaning. JBE staff, students and volunteers worked to clean playground equipment, pick up pinecones, clean sidewalks and tidy up other areas of the school. The volunteers also created two vegetable gardens that students will use.
