MMS Builders Club helps Manna House

The Midway Middle School Builders Club, an affiliate of the Kiwanis Club of Liberty County, held its sixth annual Trick-or-Treating for Canned Goods event at the school Oct. 26-29. The students collected 1,094 items to be donated to Manna House in conjunction with Georgia Power's canned food drive.

Sturdents support Wreaths for Warriors Walk

Lewis Frasier Middle School National Junior Honor Society adviser Jereice Campbell presented a $1,500 check to the Wreaths for Warriors Walk committee on Nov. 2. The wreaths purchased with the money will be among those placed at the base of 436 eastern redbud trees at Fort Stewart's Warriors Walk during a ceremony at noon on Saturday, Dec. 11.

FBLA donates books

The Walker Middle School FBLA partnered with the Long County High School FBLA for an October community service project. The students collected new and used children's books to donate to a local shelter.

Students sign up for space mission

Smiley Elementary School students will tag along in spirit on a space voyage when the space shuttle Discovery lifts off. The shuttle had been scheduled to launch Friday, but its final planned mission has been delayed several times and, according to a NASA statement issued Friday afternoon, the earliest that Discovery can now launch following repairs to its leaky ground umbilical carrier plate is Monday.

BI graphics students attend academy

On Oct. 22, 10 Bradwell Institute graphic communication students attended the Heidelberg Print Media Academy in Kennesaw to participate in the first-ever "Fit to Print" event. Heidelberg's North American office in Kennesaw is the largest demonstration and instructional facility in the United States and second world-wide only to Heidelberg, Germany.

The city of Hinesville is conducting a community-wide survey until Nov. 1 to determine post-secondary education needs in the area. City officials have encouraged local residents to fill out the questionnaire online at www.cityofhinesville.org or pick up a copy at Liberty County municipalities' city halls.

Parents help students with math skills

Lyman Hall Elementary had its annual Math-A-Rama event Oct. 14. Children in kindergarten through fifth grade worked with teachers on grade-level activities in their classrooms. Parents attended and were provided instruction by elementary curriculum specialist Susan Norce in techniques and activities to enhance their children's mathematical knowledge using everyday objects and experiences.

Students read for charity

Waldo Pafford Elementary students in Kesha Lee's fifth-grade class are putting books in the hands of children who need them simply by reading themselves. Through the ClassroomsCare Program, students are uniting across America to help Scholastic Book Clubs donate 1 million books to underprivileged families.
