MMS students collect coats for needy

Student Council at Midway Middle School collected coats and jacket to distribute to those who were in need of outerwear during the recent cold weather. Council members put out a plea throughout the school for coats and jackets and the staff and students responded generously. The coats and jackets were given away at the school on Jan. 15 and 19. Coats and jackets that were not given out on those mornings were donated to a local church that distributes clothing all year long to members of the community.

AG nixes plans to divert HOPE money

ATLANTA - Georgia Attorney General Thurbert Baker says Gov. Sonny Perdue's proposal to use lottery funds to replace general revenue funds for certain educational programs probably violates the state Constitution.

Baker sent a letter on Monday to the governor and legislative leaders stating his position.

The Long County Chamber of Commerce will have its STAR Student and Teacher recognition banquet Tuesday.

District tending to Coastal Academy

Though Hinesville's Coastal Academy is housed in an older, sometimes fickle building, the Liberty County school district has been quick to address recent issues. In January, a representative of the academy shared news of a leaky roof and heating problems at the school during a community forum hosted by the Liberty County Board of Education.

STAR luncheon set for Feb. 18

The annual STAR student luncheon, sponsored by the Liberty County Chamber of Commerce, will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 18, at Bethesda Church, 116 Patriots Trail in Hinesville. STAR is a statewide program to recognize high-achieving students.
