Rotary names speech contest winners

At the Hinesville Rotary Club's meeting on Feb. 12, six Interact Club students from Liberty County High School, Bradwell Institute, and First Presbyterian Christian Academy participated in Rotary's high school speech contest. Stephanie Castillo (center) from BI placed first, Brandon Stafford (left) from FPCA placed second and Rebecca Woods from LCHS placed third. Castillo and Stafford will participate at a competition in Douglas on March 29. Winners of that competition will compete at Rotary's District Conference in Macon on April 19. Storyteller visits BGE

Storyteller Josie Bailey sparked the imagination of students at Button Gwinnett Elementary School Feb. 4 as she put her spin on popular folktales, first describing them to the children as "just tales that folk tell." Students listened and got in on the theatrics as Bailey enlisted volunteers to use varying props to help paint the mental picture.

Bradwell Institute's Future Business Leaders of America members recently competed in the FBLA State Leadership Conference in Atlanta. In addition to attending workshops and an awards ceremony, the students visited the Atlanta Americas Mart for a tour of the business marts. FLE students get a 'snow day'

At the beginning of each nine-week grading period at Frank Long Elementary, students take a STAR Early Literacy Test to determine an Accelerated Reader points goal. During the nine weeks, students read and take tests on books within the assigned reading zone. Students must maintain an accuracy goal of 85 percent or higher during the grading period. Students who meet both the points and accuracy goals get a reward.
