Area Krogers helping replenish food bank

Since Sept. 1, Kroger stores in the Savannah area have been collecting donations to help America's Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia replenish its food-bank shelves. According to the Hinesville store's unit manager, Michael Landing, the donation drive, called a "round-up," will end Saturday.

Planners call UnityFest a success

UnityFest, a first-year community praise celebration, drew flocks of faithful Liberty Countians on Saturday to Bryant Commons in downtown Hinesville. The festival's planning-committee members, who deemed the event a success, coined a mission statement: "Believers breaking down denominational walls to gather together as a unified community, reflecting our diversity and faith through public praise and worship," and praise and worship is what they did.

Backpack Buddies expanding program

Last year, 525 elementary-school children in Liberty County were served by the Backpack Buddies program, which ensures children who receive free and reduced-price school meals don't go hungry over the weekends. This year, even more meals will be packed because the program is expanding to include 75 middle-school students and 20 Head Start preschoolers.
