Center trying to keep seniors covered

"Many seniors in our area go without heat during the cold months in order to pay for groceries, medications and other essential items," said Mary Foley, marketing director for Senior Citizens Inc. "For more than seven years, (our organization) has distributed blankets to those seniors in need. This year, with the help of Georgia Natural Gas and Starbucks Coffee, the 2011 Blanket Drive will serve communities in six counties in Coastal Georgia."

Don’t toss that Christmas tree — recycle it

I would stretch out the Christmas season as long as possible if I could. Instead of the "Twelve Days of Christmas," I would opt for the "Twelve Months of Christmas!" I love the lights, the decorations, the music and the wonderful feelings of cheerfulness at Christmas. People are nicer and friendlier during the holidays. I do get a little sad when I have to take the decorations down. But when it is time to do so, it means that it is also time for Bring One for the Chipper!

It’s nice to savor the sights, smells and sounds of Christmas

The weeks leading up to Christmas seemed to be filled with news reports of toys being recalled because they contain parts coated with lead-based paint. I told someone the other day that we never had to worry about that when we were growing up because the pine cones we used for baseballs and the limbs we used for bats were not painted. We used daddy's good plow lines for jumping rope and they also were paint-free.

Get those closets cleaned out

I may not like doing it, but once I get started cleaning out closets, it is almost like a drug. I want to clean out cabinets, storage rooms, etc. I know it sounds like a sickness, but it is true. I actually feel lighter when I purge stuff that we no longer use.
