Long opens time capsule, buries another
With help from the Masons of Georgia, Long County removed a cornerstone of the courthouse Saturday, and glimpsed artifacts from a time long gone. The stone housed a time capsule full of items from 1926.

Rotary revamps funding formula
Rotary District Governor-Elect Clyde Taylor recently updated Hinesville Rotarians on changes in funding uses and sources, including restructuring the nonprofit club's grants and partnerships. Rotary International sponsors five educational programs, five humanitarian grant programs and PolioPlus through the annual program fund and the Future Vision Fund donations. Lions donate brooms to firefighters
Liberty Coastal Lions Club President Jerry Leland presents several donated brooms to Riceboro Volunteer Fire Department Chief Dennis Fitzgerald. The club donated brooms to volunteer fire departments in Liberty County to kick off to the club's broom and mop sale. Designer home tours benefit charity
Hundreds of guests turned out for the kickoff party Thursday for the Coastal Living and Cottage Living Holiday Coastal Cottage at Yellow Bluff, which start offering public tours Monday.

Coat drive under way in Long County
LUDOWICI - As the summer heat transitions into cooler fall weather, it's important to make sure children are bundled up for warmth. Some children in Ludowici are in need of extra help this year and a group of local citizens is holding a community coat drive. The drive, Help Keep Smiley Kids Warm, is an effort to collect new and gently used coats to be distributed to those in need.

Vets, Fort Stewart mark POW/MIA Day
Area veterans, including members of Chapter 789 of the Vietnam Veterans of America, and soldiers from various units on Fort Stewart recently marked POW/MIA Day with a remembrance ceremony at Fort Stewart. The event was outside the Fort Stewart Museum at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. The sacrifices made by POW/MIA and their families were honored.
New home, new beginnings
The weather was ideal. The crowd was excited, punctual and ready to walk. Good Shepherd Missionary Baptist Church members, families and friends had come to be a part of the walk and church dedication services.

There were many wealthy plantations in Liberty County in 1860. Rice was the main crop, and the plantations were mainly along the coastal regions. Many plantation owners joined the army for the Civil War, and that left the master's wife in charge of managing the plantations.
