Rotary installs new member

The Hinesville Rotary Club inducted its newest member at the July 22 weekly meeting. Tony Leishcen joined the club after taking the pledge administered by Will Carter. Leishcen's sponsor, George Holtzman, presented a Rotary pin to him. Leishcen said it was an honor to be part of the club and will do his best to serve the community to the best of my ability.

Field trip takes youths to water park

The Eleven Black Men of Liberty County took made their annual trip to Summer Waves on July 19. Since its creation in 1991, the nonprofit organization establishes mentoring connections between volunteer community professionals and young black males, known as transcenders. Mentorship usually begins during middle school and helps the young men through their high school careers. Goodwill promotes awareness campaign

SAVANNAH -- Goodwill Industries of the Coastal Empire, Inc. announces its Awareness Campaign with upcoming promotions, fundraisers and an educational forum. The SMILE Campaign continues until Aug. 17. Community Day on the River is Saturday, the Smiley G tour begins Monday and Goodwill BLT is scheduled for Aug. 20.

Bible college has graduation

Graduation 2008 was another milestone in the life of those students who worked tirelessly during the past school term. The days of intense studying and hurrying to class were now behind them. It was time to march and receive their diplomas.

Local Lions support camp for blind

Lion Gerald Leland (right), president of the Liberty Coastal Lions Club, presents brooms to the Georgia Lions Camp for the Blind in Waycross. Receiving the brooms are Lois Faunds, camp secretary, and Eddie English, program director. The brooms are needed to sweep out cabins every day. A therapist, she continues to donate her time and energy to help people even after her retirement. After many years working abroad, she returned to this country after the death of her husband.

At 92, garden still calls local man

He may almost be a centenarian, but that does not stop him from having one of the best gardens in the Briar Bay community. Neighbors enjoy his garden just as much as he does. The garden is not only for him, but for the enjoyment of family and friends.

Native campaigns for local sheriff in Woodstock

Carolyn Wilson from Woodstock, who is a native of Hinesville and graduated in 1957 with Don Martin, took the sheriff's campaign afield earlier this month, posting his signs around her hhome. As you can see she reads the local newspaper, Coastal Courier.

Cissy Gottleb, a Liberty County School Bus Driver, went to Columbia, Mo., the weekend of May 17. She attended her nephew's high school graduation, and was able to visit, her 99-year-old grandmother, Grace Crane. Gottleb took the Coastal Courier with her and explained to her grandmother what the paper would do. So needless to say, a copy will travel back to Missouri. I can proudly say I have never heard my grandmother raise her voice in anger, Gottleb said.

Smiley Elementary teachers celebrate retirement

Faculty members of Smiley Elementary joined to honor Nancy Carter and John Carter for their years of dedication and service as Georgia educators. A celebratory dinner was held at the Jekyll Island Resort, and a PowerPoint presentation, which depicted two lives obviously dedicated to family and teaching, served as a tribute to the retirees.

Barnards celebrate golden anniversary

Bernard and Sheila Barnard celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary May 4. The couple married in Nahunta First Baptist Church in 1963, and they have two children: Bernie Barnard Jr. and his wife Kim, who live in Pooler, and Bruce Barnard and his wife Angie, who live in Vidalia. The Barnards have five grandchildren and one great-grandson.
