What was worth seeing in 2017 and what wasn’t

"Coco," "War for the Planet of the Apes," "Mother!" these were three films that just missed my 10-best list by the skin of their teeth. On the other hand, movies such as "A Dog's Purpose," "The Great Wall" and "Valerian" just dodged the bullet of landing on my 10 worst list.

Make children responsible for getting into college

Q: Our 17-year-old daughter wants to begin visiting colleges. She's a high-school junior this year and this is when the college visitations begin. We're feeling like the Grinches Who Stole College Visitations because neither of us feel there's any value to this practice. We fail to understand how walking among and through buildings that all begin to look the same after a while and hearing a sales pitch from someone whose job depends on persuading an impressionable teen that the college he works for is a perfect fit for a teen he doesn't know is going ...

Do kids owe dad respect?

Is a father owed respect from his children? Actually, the question, from a father, was rhetorical: Isn't a father owed his children's respect? The dad in question maintains that because he loves his children unconditionally, provides their standard of living (he is the sole breadwinner), and has made many sacrifices - financially and otherwise - on their behalf that he is owed their respect. By the way, his children are 6, 10 and 14, and the disrespect at issue - sass, ignoring, demands, emotional outbursts and the nebulous but widespread "bad attitude" - is emanating primarily from the older two but the ...

Dream the impossible Ramen

Nothings is more satisfying than some hot soup on cold days. I enjoy making homemade soups and stews, but I am just as content on making a quick boil-and-go Ramen noodle soup.

Earlier discipline starts, easier it is on kids, parents

Q: My parents recently told me that my husband and I are letting our toddler run our family and that it's becoming increasingly uncomfortable for them to visit or have us visit with them - they live 10 miles away - because of her misbehavior. Mind you, she is only 28 months old. They told me, for example, that she should be toilet trained already. Her pediatrician, however, told us to wait until she was closer to 3. In addition, she throws frequent tantrums and often refuses to do what we tell her to do. That's normal for this age ...

Interpretation of events vary depending on location

There were a couple of businesses Valley residents frequented when they wanted to hear the latest gossip. One, of course, was the Hoffbrau. Breakfast was the busiest part of the day, and the breakfast rush was especially brisk on that Tuesday in late October.
