Youth health initiative gets going

The local We Can! communitywide health and fitness campaign was launched Friday with a proclamation signing and meeting between leaders of three community partners, Liberty County, the city of Hinesville and Fort Stewart. The tri-group effort is the first of its kind in the nation, and will focus on implementing curriculum and data from the National Institutes of Health into available programs offered by several Liberty County agencies.

Troupe donates to civic center

The Liberty Theatre Company, formed by the Hinesville Area Arts Council, made a $500 donation to the Dorchester Civic Center, Inc. on May 3 as a way to thank the center and its board for allowing the company to stage its recent production, "Vanities," at the restored school.

Scouts learn lesson in Morse code

On April 16 at Dorchester Academy in Midway, Liberty County Boy Scout Troop 581 listened to guest speaker Alexander Gardner give a lecture on international Morse code and the importance of staying in school, getting a good education and acting respectfully.

Members of the Morning Glory Garden Club, of the Garden Club of Georgia, Inc.- Oleander District, set up camellia displays in area banks in March for the public to enjoy. Varieties displayed included Frances Smith, Alba Plena, Rubra, Julio Nuncio, Anita, White Empress, Professor Sargent, Pink Perfection, Lady Clare, variegated and Finlandia.

Memorial Drive round-about may get art work

City officials plan to beautify Hinesville by commissioning street art for the Memorial Drive roundabout. Hinesville Mayor Jim Thomas said Savannah College of Art and Design students will create designs for a sculpture or memorial art piece that characterizes and celebrates Hinesville. Ribbon walk ties families to deployed soldiers

A crowd of Army spouses, children and dogs, most clad in bright yellow T-shirts, gathered under gray, drizzly skies Saturday for the Yellow Ribbon Walk on Fort Stewart. The walk marked the halfway point for the 3rd Infantry Divisions Run/Walk To and From Iraq/Afghanistan, an exercise and morale boosting initiative begun in January.

Military children enjoy post Wheels Day

Preschoolers eagerly waited for a turn to sit in the driver's seat during Wheels Day Friday on Fort Stewart. Military children from the installation's Child Development Centers were given a tour of numerous emergency and service vehicles, including a Hinesville police car, an Army humvee, a Forestry Division front-end loader and a Fort Stewart Fire Department ladder truck.

CASA to celebrate moms at luncheon

The Atlantic Area Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) will hold its second annual Mother's Day Luncheon at noon Thursday, May 6, at the Chatham Club in the Desoto Hilton Hotel. The theme is "Every Child Deserves a Good Mother." The cost is $50 per person and proceeds benefit CASA. Checks can be mailed to Savannah CASA, 428 Bull St., suite 205, Savannah, GA 31401.
