Dorchester Academy gets $50,000 grant

Dorchester Academy was one of 10 historic schools from 250 applicants across the country and the only one in Georgia to receive a $50,000 preservation grant from Lowe's this week. Lowe's Companies, Inc. and the National Trust for Historic Preservation awarded nearly $500,000 in grants from Lowe's Charitable and Educational Foundation to historic schools across America.

Grief counselor reaches out to residents

Betsy Kammerud joined Hospice Savannah's Full Circle Center for Grief and Loss last year. Now, she said, she is delighted to bring her skills as a bereavement counselor to Liberty County. Each Wednesday afternoon, she will see children and adults in the education room at Liberty Regional Medical Center.

Apartment residents have community day

The Pines at Willowbrook residents recently attended the community's third annual fun day. Participants enjoyed water balloon games, face painting, a cake walk, bouncy houses, Bingo, horse and pony rides, and a yard sale. Residents munched on snow cones, cotton candy, popcorn, watermelon, barbecued chicken, hot dogs and burgers. The Hinesville Police Department did free fingerprinting and the Hinesville Fire Department allowed residents to tour a fire truck.

Equal pay crusader highlights post observance

Lilly Ledbetter didn't get a dime from her decade-long struggle to make fair pay a law. Ledbetter said she was just trying to do the right thing when she filed a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in July 1998 against her former employer, the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in Gadsden, Ala.

Firefighters give muscle diseases the boot

LUDOWICI - The Ludowici/Long County Fire Department recently teamed up with the Muscular Dystrophy Association for a "Fill the Boot" campaign . During the past two weekends, firefighters raised about $3,200, which will be used to fight muscular dystrophy. The firefighters accepted donations from motorists at the intersection of Highways 84 and 57.
