LCSO provides food for needy families

Old kitchens hold memories, memorials

The kitchen is the heart of the home. This is as true today as it was 100 years ago. Back then, the kitchen was a separate little building that usually was built before the main house. It was connected by a small porch or walkway that we called the dogtrot. I guess we called it that because that is where the old hound dog trotted between the house and the kitchen, waiting for us to throw him a cold biscuit.

Ann Parker and James Blank pose with a copy of the Coastal Courier on May 17 outside the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Fla. One week earlier, Parker had donated a kidney to Blank. They are good friends, and both attend Bethesda Church in Hinesville. Parker's donation marked the 1,000th kidney donation at the Jacksonville Mayo Clinic. She celebrated and enjoyed cake with the clinic staff. After some ups and downs with post-transplant procedures, Blank now is doing well. Parker said the transplant also marked the third time someone from Bethesda Church has donated a kidney to another.
