WASHINGTON -- Barack Obama was elected the nation's first black president Tuesday night in a historic triumph that overcame racial barriers as old as America itself.
WASHINGTON -- Barack Obama, seeking to become the first black president, moved ahead of Republican John McCain Tuesday night in the race for the White House in a country clamoring for change. Fellow Democrats picked up a Virginia Senate seat and elected a Missouri governor. Obama swept to victories in traditionally Democratic states in the East and Midwest, while McCain countered in the safest of Republican territory.

WASHINGTON -- Democrats pushed toward ousting two Florida Republicans from the House on Tuesday and defended first-term incumbents once considered vulnerable as they hoped heavy voters turnouts at a time of economic anxiety might add more than 20 seats to their majority. "It's the night we have been waiting for," said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.
LUDOWICI -- According to Long County Elections Superintendent Marie Middleton, voter turnout Tuesday in Long County is high. "Right now it looks like the turnout is going to be high, and it already has been greater than we had in the primary in July," she said.
As the county braces for a predicted record number of voters, local political party headquarters drastically differ on their approach to the final weekend of the 2008 election season.
Mark Floyd, Republican candidate for sheriff, said he is not a negative person and he has not run a negative campaign.
