On Saturday April 16, 2016, the Geechee Kunda Cultural Center in Riceboro hosted its annual festival known as "The Gathering" from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Gathering at Geechee Kunda focused on the Gullah Geechee culture of Georgia, the Carolinas and northeast Florida, and its relationship to the people of Africa and the diaspora. The event features performances, lectures, displays, demonstrations, arts and crafts, and food.

The Hinesville Housing Authority had a ribbon-cutting Tuesday afternoon for its Hineshouse Way Apartments, which provides affordable housing for veterans. Community members, Housing Authority staff and local officials gathered at the site of the Hineshouse Way four-unit apartment on Rebecca Street, where guest speakers talked about the housing serving local veterans. The other Hineshouse Way apartment is on Welborn Street and has two units.

A former assistant band director at Long County High School has been arrested and charged with engaging in sexual misconduct with a student, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said Thursday. Michael Loredo was arrested Wednesday night at his home in Brantley County and charged with one count of sexual assault against a person in custody, the GBI said in a news release.
