Hinesville's Fort Stewart wastewater treatment facility has sewage release

POSTED: May 12, 2017 4:20 p.m.

Hinesville's wastewater treatment plant on Fort Stewart released gallons of sewage early Thursday morning.

Here is the press release:

On Thursday, May 11 at approximately 6:25 a.m., the City of Hinesville’s Ft. Stewart wastewater treatment plant experienced a sewage release. The release consisted of approximately 4,900 gallons of foam and mixed liquor. A small volume of the mixed liquor was ultimately incorporated into the normal effluent flow. Analysis for the 24-hour period from 9:10 a.m. on Wednesday May 10 through 9:10 a.m. on Thursday May 11 does not indicate any permit violations or impacts to effluent water quality.

Operations staff followed established contingency-response procedures and notified the appropriate regulatory agencies.

Major upgrades and improvements have been made at the Ft. Stewart wastewater treatment plant. This upgrade allows the city to make the water much cleaner, meet permit limits, increase reliability and establish more redundancy. The City of Hinesville is committed to continual improvements in order to reduce future incidents.
