Ludowici Police Chief Frank McClellan said his department is investigating claims of animal cruelty posted Jan. 6 on a private Facebook page by a New-York-based animal welfare group.

The group, Guardians of Rescue, said in a press release they rescued a dog named Liam from a Ludowici residence. A release issued by the group said they were made aware of Liam’s plight by animal advocates in Long County.

McClellan, who became Ludowici’s police chief in February 2017, said he is investigating.

“I waited until I got the vet’s report and once I got that, I got in touch with DA’s office,” he said. “And I am waiting to get a word back from them to see if it’s going to be a felony charge or a misdemeanor charge. Once I get the guidance from them, we will proceed with those charges.”
