Fair Housing Symposium set for Thursday

POSTED: April 13, 2018 11:14 a.m.

The Hinesville Community Development Department will host its annual Fair Housing Symposium from 1-3 p.m. Thursday at the Liberty County Performing Arts Center, 2140 E. Oglethorpe Highway, Hinesville.

This year’s theme, “Fair Housing’s Golden Anniversary: Remembering and Recommitting,” commemorates 50 years since the passing of the Fair Housing Act. The act provides equal access to affordable housing to everyone in the United States.

“The Fair Housing Symposium not only highlight’s the city of Hinesville’s dedication to fair housing, but it also brings together people and resources in order to educate the public about fair and affordable housing in Hinesville,” said Community Development Department Interim Director Kristin Bryant.

This year’s symposium will feature speakers from the Georgia Legal Services Program and the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

“We want to make sure that our community is aware that we take their civil rights very seriously and that there is very strict enforcement,” explained Bryant. “Every citizen has a right to fair and affordable housing that is not to be dictated by skin color, race, national origin, sex, disability, religion or family status.”
