Panther named region's player of year

All 2-AAA football teams announced

Liberty County junior running back Kris Coleman was named the Region 2-AAA Player of the Year and teammate Alvin Roberts was named the region’s top defensive player by the region’s coaches.

Coleman ran for 1,787 yards and 19 touchdowns for the Panthers, who finished 9-4 and made it to the Class AAA quarterfinals before falling 31-7 to Calhoun. Liberty was unbeaten in the region, finishing 5-0.

Roberts, a senior, had a nose for the football. He finished with 88 solo tackles and 20 tackles behind the line of scrimmage. He also recorded three sacks, four interceptions, two fumble recoveries, a touchdown and a safety for the Panthers, who were well represented on the team with 18 selections.

First team picks included receiver Jaleel Gilbert, a junior; senior lineman Matthew Carter and sophomore lineman Brock Pavo; defensive linemen Traveon Freeman, Tramel Walthour and Jason Hill, linebacker Markel Johnson; defensive back Joshua Washington and kicker Alec Sutton.

Making the second team were junior runningback Desmond Brown, sophomore lineman William Jenkins, senior linebacker Cleon Hamilton and senior defensive backs Russell Dandy and Karrington Warner.

Sophomore Panthers quarterback Dionte Bowens was named honorable mention, along with offensive linemen Jacob Roop and Frank LeCounte; defensive lineman Enrika Tolbert and linebacker Noan Dickens.

Blue Tide also get nods

Long County, which finished 0-10 in coach J.T. Pollock’s first season, had four players named to the team, including senior running back E.J. Crawford and senior tight end Christian Bass. Both were first-team picks.

Making the second team were offensive lineman Lorenzo Buckner and defensive lineman Quanilius Bacon.
