Liberty County Schools are looking for individuals and organizations to help ensure some students who show promise early will be able to pay for college educations.

"I cannot emphasize enough how awesome this scholarship is for the students and the Liberty County Community," LCSS REACH coordinator Torri Jackson said. "The types of students these REACH scholars are pretty much guarantees a great return to the community upon graduating from college."

The Realizing Educational Achievement Can Happen program was launched in 2012 by Gov. Nathan Deal and Liberty bought in the program in 2015.

Essentially, it assures students who are selected in eighth grade $10,000 scholarships, more if they attend a participating college. It also assigns academic coaches to shepherd the students through high school.

Money comes from donations and school districts are responsible for about a third of the money, while statewide sources cover the rest. Jackson said the most recent local donors were Georgia Power and Gulfstream, both which donated $1,000.

Liberty County currently has five scholars in eighth through 10th grade. The two named last October were Dominique King and Patrick Underwood from Lewis Frasier Middle School.

Money being solicited now will fund 2018-19 scholars. At least $3,500 is needed for each one and schools can fund up to five scholars per year, if enough money is raised. System, state and federal money cannot be used.

"Therefore, fundraising champions are needed to ensure the financial success of our REACH scholars on the path to college," information promoting the program says.

To donate, go to or the state REACH website, or submit donation to LCSS student service at 200 Bradwell St. Hinesville.

Donations tax deductible and all money goes to scholarships
