The speaker at the Eleven Black Men of Liberty County’s 15th annual Scholarship Banquet has emphasized providing educational opportunities to non-traditional and minority students during his career as an educator.
Daniel K. Wims, PhD, is the executive vice president, vice president for academic affairs, and a professor of agricultural sciences at Fort Valley State University in Fort Valley.
A native of a small Georgia farm community, Lumpkin, Wims earned his bachelor’s degree from Fort Valley before getting a master’s in agricultural education from Ohio State University and doctorate from the University of Maryland.
“I have slept where they sleep,” the professor said. “I have eaten the food they eat. And I’ve had some of the same professors they have. Therefore, I have a unique knowledge of the culture on this campus.”
His experience along with his age allow him to speak candidly to students and be critical yet uplifting to encourage them against excessive tattoos, drug and alcohol abuse and Internet postings that may hurt their future careers.
All of which fit into the goals of the local mentoring group. The banquet is set for March 28 starting with a reception at 6:15 in Club Stewart on Fort Stewart. The meal will start at 7.
