We were happy to announce the winners of the first Win-dex Business of the Quarter Awards; the Liberty County Board of Education Central Office in Hinesville and Harbor Bay Car Wash in Midway.
Both surpassed the award criteria by going the extra mile in creating attractive appearances. The program is sponsored by the Liberty County Chamber of Commerce and Keep Liberty County Beautiful. Benefits of the awards are to encourage businesses to spruce up their exteriors, to help businesses increase sales and services by creating inviting entries and to promote a more attractive community one building at a time.
There were nine nominations for the first awards, running the gamut from retail and food establishments to educational and religious institutions. Each nomination had merits, making the selection a thoughtful process for the master gardeners who judged them.
In accepting the award for the board of education office, Lily Baker, board chair, praised Vera Mobley and her crew of seven for the lovely landscaping that graces the building. Mrs. Mobley, who is supervisor of groundskeeping for the BoE has created striking flower and plant beds at the central office as well as other school properties.
The recently-opened Harbor Bay Car Wash is owned by Melissa Ray, who went to great lengths to make it attractive, functional and environmentally friendly. It doesn't look like the run-of-the-mill car wash with an elegant exterior and appealing landscape. It is just plain pretty. The property is maintained daily. Thank you, Melissa, for making that extra effort during the construction for including the water recycling unit.
Thank you to both award winners for having that "streak-free shine." We can take pride in both.
Nominations for the second quarter will be accepted through June 30. Make the effort to recognize outstanding businesses.
The city of Flemington invites you to the Clean Community Challenge Cleanup next Saturday. A number of youth and young adults as well as businesses and agencies will clean up the streets and streams of this pretty community. In annual litter indexes, Flemington always ranks as one of the cleanest communities in our county. Part of that is due to the dedication of Mayor Sandra Martin and her council members who consistently take to the streets to keep their roads and creeks clean. But even this clean community can use an annual cleanup to canvas the main roads to pick up litter that is either thrown or blown out of vehicles.
Meet at 8:30 a.m. at the city hall on Old Sunbury Road. Supplies and lunch will be provided to volunteers. Challenge T-shirts will also be presented. Students from Liberty High and Bradwell Institute are challenging each other at this cleanup. Employees from the Liberty County Health Department have also challenged the Department of Family and Children Services. They will also be joined by volunteers from The Heritage Bank and NeSmith Chevrolet, among others.
There are still several events coming up for the Great American Cleanup! We need you to get involved and make a difference where you live!

May 10: Community Recycle It! Fair, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Turn in electronics, paint, fluorescent light bulbs, phone books, and other household hazardous waste for recycling. We will also accept toys for reuse or recycling. We will also accept sheets, blankets and towels for the Liberty County Humane Society. Call 368-4888.
May 21: City of Midway Cleanup 9 a.m.- noon. Meet at the city hall. Supplies and lunch will be provided. Call KLCB at 368-4888 or 884-3344.
