Spc. Avery S. Cody, a native of Atlanta, is going into his sixth year with the U.S. Army. He’s serving his second deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom at Contingency Operating Base Speicher, near Tikrit, Iraq.
Cody is a bass guitar player with the 3rd Infantry Division Band, based on Fort Stewart. “I was ecstatic to find out that I could play the bass guitar in the Army,” Cody said.
He is the son of Evelyn and Shawn Cody of Atlanta, and a 2005 graduate of North Atlanta High School. Cody has three children, Aniya, 2, Avery Jr., 1, and Aliya, 6 months.
After completing basic training in October 2005 at Fort Jackson in South Carolina, Cody graduated from the U.S. Army Quartermaster School at Fort Lee, Va., in January 2006 as an automated logistics specialist.
He has been with the 3rd ID Band for 10 months while receiving on-the-job training to prepare him to attend the U.S. Army Element School of Music at Little Creek Naval Air Base in Norfolk, Va., to become military occupational specialty qualified as a bass guitar player.
“On-the-job training has been working well. It has helped me get back to where I used to be prior to joining the Army,” Cody said.
He entertains the armed forces with many different genres of music. As part of the Task Force Marne Jazz Combo, the soldier recently played a gig at the Green Beans Coffee shop at the Post Exchange shopping complex for soldiers on COB Speicher.
“I like the way jazz music makes me feel,” Cody said. “When I hear good music, I get chills in my body. It can easily uplift someone, make them move the way they move … I like to contribute to that.”
