Boys, Girls Club Days on post this weekend

Saturday is a special day for some very special people — Stewart and Hunter kids.

It's the Boys and Girls Club Day for Kids, and Stewart/Hunter will celebrate with games, face-painting, inflatables, door prizes, food and other fun things such as a sack race and tug-of-war.

The free fun starts at 10 a.m. at School Age Services building on Stewart and the School Age Center on Hunter.

Childcare space available

Childcare service is available on Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield. As of Sept. 10, available spaces at Stewart were 3 infant, 20 pre-toddlers, 32 toddlers, 26 pre-school, 30 before-pre-K and K, and 20 after-pre-K and K. Before- and after-school for children 6-11 and has 72 spaces for before and 36 spaces for after school.

On Hunter, space available is 22 pre-toddlers, 10 toddlers,49 pre-school, 29 before-pre-K and K, 25 after-pre-K and K, 47 before-school age (6-11) and 56 after-school.

Racquetball tournament

A men’s and women’s double-elimination racquetball tournament will be Sept. 20-22 at Newman Fitness Center and the 4thIBCT Fitness Center. It is free.

Registration for various divisions of men’s and women’s singles open through Sept. 17. First and second place medals will be awarded in all divisions.

Golf 4 Life

Learn golf at a Golf 4 Life clinic from 9-10 a.m. Sept. 22 at Hunter Golf Club.

This is an opportunity to fine tune your golf game or for beginners to learn the game. The clinic covers all areas of golf and is open to the public. Participants are encouraged to bring a friend. Sessions are free.

Wild Hog Competition

Registration remains open until Oct. 5 for the 2012 Wild Hog Competition that continues through Dec. 31.

Register at the Stewart Pass & Permit Office or the Hunter Pass & Permit Office. Participants must hold valid permits. There is a $5 entry fee.

Judging will be based on the number of hogs harvested during unmanaged hunts on Stewart and Hunter. All hogs must be submitted at the Pass & Permit office or the Fish and Wildlife office on Fort Stewart.

Managed deer hunts

Registration is under way for managed deer hunts offered by FMWR’s Outdoor Recreation Division.

Apply at Pass & Permit offices on  Fort Stewart and Hunter. The hunts are for active duty and retirees. Fifty slots are available for each hunt.

The first hunt will be in Training Area Delta on Oct. 20. Register by 5 p.m. Oct. 8. The second hunt will Nov. 17 in the Red Cloud Area. Register by 5 p.m. Nov. 5.

For each hunt, the 50 participants will be selected by lottery.

There are morning and afternoon hunts, with lunch provided both days. Game check and cleaning station will be provided by Fish and Wildlife. A $10 fee per hunter is is due upon selection.

‘Horses 101’ trip

Join Leisure Travel on Sept. 29 for a trip to Bluff Creek Stables in Midway for some basic horse care and a ride. Registration continues until Sept. 24.

More than 100 acres of pasture is available for riding. Participants will be divided into two groups. While one learns care, the other will ride. Each session will last about an hour.

Youth younger than 18 must be accompanied by parent or guardian. The $45 cost includes transportation, ride and lesson. Space is limited on the bus, which will depart at 8 a.m.

Blues & BBQ in Hinesville

Downtown Hinesville will be filled with music and barbecue from 4-11 p.m. Sept. 29 for the annual Blues & BBQ behind the Judicial Center on Main Street.

The event will feature Jimmy Wayne Renfro, Everready and headliner Joey Gilmore.

In addition to blues, there will be a barbecue contest, sweet tea tasting competition, a sidewalk chalk art contest for all ages, beer-tasting and vendors.

Big Buck Contest

Register now for a chance to win cash for the largest buck harvested on Fort Stewart or Hunter. Registration continues until Oct. 19.

Registration costs $30 for active duty, retiree and family members, and $40 for civilians.  

All deer harvested must be turned in to the Fish & Wildlife Branch for scoring. Only two bucks can be entered, with the higher-scored buck counting. The contest runs through Dec. 31, and winners will be announced at the Wildlife Gala scheduled for Jan. 26.

Wildlife Photo Contest

Registration is open until Nov. 9 for the 2012 Wildlife Photo Contest for amateur photographers.

Entries must be turned in to a Stewart Pass & Permit Office by Nov. 9. The competition includes a youth and adult group. The entry fees are $5 per photo (ages 4-15) and $10 per photo (16 and up).

Soccer, cheerleading coaches

Fort Stewart’s Youth Sports needs soccer and cheerleading coaches.

Volunteers work two weeknight evenings for practice and on Saturdays for games. Volunteers must submit to a background check.

Post-Wide Yard Sale

Registration is under way for the Great FMWR Post-Wide Housing Area Yard Sale, scheduled from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Oct. 20 on Fort Stewart and Hunter.

There is no charge for on-post residents to sell. Registration ensures the location of the sales will be on a sale map, which will be available on FMWR websites and Facebook page only.

Residents interested in selling should call the Fort Stewart Sports Office at 767-8238 or the Tominac Fitness Center at 315-5078 on Hunter.
