So far this year, Deadpool, Batman and Superman have tried to save the world, not to mention the box office these superheroes so clearly dominate right now.

The question is, does “Captain America: Civil War” make it a trifecta? The answer is a resounding yes. In spades. Just when we thought we could suffer from superhero fatigue, here comes a breath of fresh air.

Chris Evans is back for the third time as Captain America/Steve Rogers and in this go-round, he’s pitted against a rival far more dangerous than HYDRA or even Ultron: The United Nations. The U.N. fears that Cap, as well as the rest of the Avengers, are closer to vigilantes than actual heroes. In order to make sure their actions aren’t deemed threatening, the U.N. demands that Cap be part of a governing body that will control him.

One person that supports the initiative is Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark. Not to mention, he continues to have an overwhelming feeling of jealousy toward Rogers, but Rogers will have none of it.

Cap sets out creating his own team to hunt down a villain who also threatens their existence (Daniel Bruhl). His team consists of Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye, Sebastian Shaw’s Winter Soldier, Anthony Mackie’s Falcon, and a new character named the Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman).

Determined to get in their way is Stark’s team: Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow, Don Cheadle’s Rhodey and  Paul Bettany’s Jarvis. Oh, and Spider-Man and Ant-Man make small appearances here and there as well.

As someone who doesn’t claim to be the world’s biggest Marvel fan, it would take me an all-day marathon before I could sort out the endless parade of characters and who’s doing what to whom, but “Civil War” manages to find a consistent balance throughout. Even some of the more dialogue-driven scenes are riveting because it sounds like these movies are constantly trying to grow up.

I think this is probably the type of movie that some audiences were hoping for when they went to see “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice.” However, the new film will not disappoint that particular crowd. It has a lot of the same elements: An overload of characters, a highly complex plot, exhilarating action and special effects to break up the monotony, but the difference is that “Civil War” knows when to have fun with itself.

With the Captain America franchise, this is one series from Marvel that gets better with each installment. If Marvel can keep making movies of this caliber with these deep themes and intriguing characters, they can make another 20 for all I care. Way to go, Marvel.
