Anna Phillips, a city of Hinesville employee, recently won the icing to top her wedding cake.
In October, her fiancé, Skip Steffan of Brunswick, entered an essay contest hosted by Elegance Inns to win a four-day honeymoon in St. Augustine, Fla. — which also happens to be Phillips’ all-time favorite vacation spot, and the destination for her wedding.
“Years ago, I fell in love with St. Augustine,” said Phillips, a geographic information system coordinator. “If I need a getaway, I go to St. Augustine.”
Knowing about Phillips' affinity for the oldest city in America, Steffan composed a short essay explaining why he thought the city was perfect for a honeymoon.
“I enjoy St. Augustine’s combination of history, shopping and the beach,” Steffan wrote.
He got word in early December that he and Phillips were among the winners in the “Romance is Inn the Air Honeymoon Contest 2009.”
Phillips said one part of the essay, in particular, still brings tears to her eyes when she reads it.
“St. Augustine is a special romantic treat that is right for a once-in-a-lifetime honeymoon. The serenity leads to romance that makes two want to share being one,” Steffan wrote.
The couple, who originally planned on staying in St. Augustine for a weekend honeymoon, won four nights worth of accommodations at the Inn on Charlotte, a bed and breakfast, several free meals at local restaurants, trolley tickets to help them travel the city, as well as tickets to museums and historic sites such as the Fountain of Youth.  The trip is worth approximately $1,800.
Phillips, of course, was surprised about winning the contest.
“You know, you enter these things but don’t expect to win,” she said.
Said Inn owner Lynn Fairchild, “We are all so excited that the April grand prize is being awarded to a lovely and gracious Georgia couple.”
Phillips and Steffan will get married and go on their honeymoon in mid-April.
