Melissa McCarthy and Sandra Bullock play an unlikely pair of law enforcement officers in "The Heat." - photo by Studio photo

Actress Melissa McCarthy is having a moment. And it’s a very good moment, as she has become the go-to lady for outrageous laughs.
As far as I’m concerned, McCarthy always has been funny. Her work on TV’s “The Gilmore Girls” and “Samantha Who?” was priceless. In fact, I still re-watch episodes of “Samantha Who?” to get a fix of some of the funniest gals ever to be on television.
But for many, McCarthy wasn’t a household name until the hit comedy film “Bridesmaids” happened in 2011, giving women their own version of the bad behavior and slapstick made famous by “The Hangover.” McCarthy earned an Academy Award nomination for best supporting actress for her work in that film, and also has won an Emmy Award for her performances on the CBS sitcom “Mike and Molly.”
Well, McCarthy is back in “The Heat,” now in theaters, and teams with the director of “Bridesmaids” and one famous co-star, Academy Award winner, Sandra Bullock.
Bullock plays an overachieving FBI agent not so far removed from the one she played in “Miss Congeniality.” She may be a rising star at the bureau, but nobody likes her.
When a case takes her to Boston, she’s forced to play nice with McCarthy’s uncouth local police detective. If she doesn’t, not only will she fail to break the case, but she also won’t get the big promotion she’s been hoping for.
The results of the unlikely matchup are hilarious. Yes, there’s a decent plot in place, but the joy of this film is an odd couple discovering each other’s quirks.
For instance, there’s the moment McCarthy discovers that Bulloch is wearing Spanx, which was laugh-out-loud funny. Also, the audience discovers that Bullock’s character is so pathetic that her only friend is a tabby cat. By the way, it isn’t even her cat — it’s the neighbor’s.
Bullock is the butt of most of the jokes, which I thought was adorable. I may have to have a Bullock marathon. If so, “While You Were Sleeping” and “Miss Congeniality” will definitely be the films I re-watch.
“The Heat” mostly is about the two lead actresses being very funny together and I loved it.
I am a fan!
“The Heat” is rated R, mostly due to bad language, the majority of which comes from McCarthy.
