In honor of the 25th anniversary of Bottlenose research, members of The Dolphin Project will hold a celebratory event at the J.F. Gregory Park Pavilion from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday.
There’s a lot to celebrate.  
Before The Dolphin Project was founded, there was nearly no knowledge of the Bottlenose dolphin species that inhabits Georgia’s coast, said TDP President Peach Hubbard.
Today, The Dolphin Project has accumulated enough data to submit a research paper at the 2015 Marine Mammal Conference.
From being a small group of volunteers in Savannah, Georgia, the Dolphin Group has expanded across the entire nation. Hubbard said, “While most of our members are located across Georgia and South Carolina, we have people from North Carolina, Oregon, Michigan, Indiana, Tennessee, California, and the East Coast.”
The Dolphin Project is a volunteer-based organization formed to study and gather research on wild dolphins along the Georgia coastline.
The organization consists of scientists and researchers, but mainly is driven by the support and passion of their volunteers. Together, they collaborate with nationwide environmental organizations to not only protect the coastal environment and the dolphins, but to also bring public awareness to these current issues.
The Dolphin Project also works with schools, Rotaries, and community organizations through their Education Outreach Program. The program holds workshops to educate people about the dolphin species and their importance to the environment. The next Dolphin Program/Research Training Workshop will be held on Saturday, August 2 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Southside Savannah Library. Everyone is invited to attend, no membership required.
Saturday’s event includes low country boil and barbcue catered by JThomas Catering with wine donated by The Georgia Winery.
A silent auction is planned for the event, featuring gift certificates, local art, vacations, and more. The Christie Alan Band will also be performing live at the event.
