The Apostle Paul wrote, “Grace be to you and peace from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ. Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God” (2 Cor. 1:2 – 4). In a world where trouble waits around every corner it is good to know that Christians do not have to face trouble alone, we have God. The psalmist referred to God as a father who has pity on his children. “Like as a father pitieth his children, so the LORD pitieth them that fear him” (Psalm 103:13). God is concerned about us. He knows our fears, he knows when our heart is aching.
From the beginning God has cared for us. Even in creation He prepared the world so that man could survive and thrive. When man faced loneliness because there was “not found a help meet for him” (Gen. 2:20), God formed woman and brought her to man. Sadly man’s seemingly perfect world did not last long. It was man who strayed from God, by disobeying God. At that point in time God could have justly destroyed man, but instead of destroying, God made a way that man could be justified once again. He determined to bring Christ into the world so that a sacrifice that would cleanse the souls of men could be offered. The love of God goes beyond man’s understanding. “In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins” (1 John 4:9, 10).
Peter wrote, “Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you” (1 Peter 5:7). In order to be able to have the faith to trust God with our cares we must keep our faith strong. Satan would love for Christians to turn their back on God in times of distress. Job stands out as one who in the face of trials remained faithful to God. He lost most of his possessions, all his children were killed, his so called friends tormented them with their ideas of what his problem was, even his wife told him to curse God and die. In the face of all this Job said, “But he said unto her, Thou speakest as one of the foolish women speaketh. What? shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil? In all this did not Job sin with his lips” (Job 2:10).
David went through many times of turmoil and trouble in his life time, but he would seek help from God to see him through. Notice Psalm 3: “LORD, how are they increased that trouble me! many are they that rise up against me. Many there be which say of my soul, There is no help for him in God. But thou, O LORD, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head. I cried unto the LORD with my voice, and he heard me out of his holy hill. I laid me down and slept; I awaked; for the LORD sustained me. I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people, that have set themselves against me round about. Arise, O LORD; save me, O my God: for thou hast smitten all mine enemies upon the cheek bone; thou hast broken the teeth of the ungodly. Salvation belongeth unto the LORD: thy blessing is upon thy people”. David truly needed the blessings of God to continue on, just as we also need God’s blessings.
So as we travel life’s road we know that there will be times of sadness and hardships which we will face. Yet the Christian knows that God knows and cares for us. In him we can find comfort. “Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God” (2 Cor. 1:3 – 4).
