Ephesians 4: 11-12 says, "So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up ..."

This verse teaches us that Jesus Christ, who is head of the church, gave the gift of leadership to certain positions within the church. Notice that their key responsibility is not to be doing all of the ministry but to equip God’s people to do much of it.

Notice the result is that the body of Christ might be built up. In other words, when everybody is involved in using their gifts and talents, others will grow in their faith and the Christian community will also be multiplied.

Many throughout history have assumed that all ministry should be performed by paid staff within the church. But this is not God’s plan because we all have our part in ministry.

The great reformer, Martin Luther, said it was the worse trick of the devil to convince people that ministry should not be happening in the home or the workplace but in the church only.

If we are not doing the ministry that we are gifted to do, then either someone else is doing what they are not gifted to do, or the ministry is not being done at all.

So how do you find out what ministry you should be involved in? It’s probably something you would enjoy doing, or something that others are saying you would be good at, or something that the Lord is impressing upon you to do.

If you are not sure, then try something. And it won’t be long until you will know if that ministry is for you.

If a believer is totally committed to Jesus Christ, then that person will have no problem saying "yes" to any ministry the Lord is calling he or she to be involved in. So the big question is: Are you committed?
