Brown to speak in Ludowici

The Laymen Ministry of St. James Missionary Baptist Church in Ludowici, where Dr. James L. Evans is pastor, will have its annual Lay Day Service on Sunday, April 20, at 4 p.m.
The speaker will be the Rev. Matthew Southall Brown Sr. of Savannah.
A native of Savannah, Brown is a graduate of Savannah State University. He received a bachelor's of divinity degree from American Baptist School of Theology and studied at Princeton Institute of Theology and at the Division of Addiction Sciences of the University of Miami.
He accepted the call to the ministry under Dr. Ralph Mark Gilbert of Historic First African Baptist Church. During his career, Brown has led three congregations, including St. John Baptist Church in Savannah, also known as "The Mighty Fortress."
Brown became the pastor of St. John in 1969 and remained pastor for 35 years. While at St. John, he was responsible for converting East Broad Street School into an apartment complex for the elderly and disabled. The Matthew Southall Brown Learning Resource Center came into fruition and was named in his honor. He retired in 2005 and is pastor emeritus.
He is a member of the Savannah Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance. Brown is also the moderator of the Berean Missionary Baptist Association.
