A shooting on Wednesday morning in Alexandria, Virginia, has brought a flood of prayers from politicians and communities who are united in faith following the attack.

While practicing for the Congressional Baseball Game scheduled for June 15, six were injured and hospitalized, reported CNN. Steve Scalise, the majority whip of the House of Representatives, was among them.

The annual friendly bipartisan game takes place in an effort to raise money for charity, said the New York Times. The article stated that the Republican team was gathered for one final practice before the gunman opened fire.

After hearing the news, Democrats gathered together in the baseball field where they had been practicing and closed their eyes, praying for colleagues, staff and friends who had been injured, said Time magazine.

Democratic Rep. Ruben J. Kihuen (Nevada) tweeted about the prayer, and many other Democrats who had also been at the practice tweeted their thoughts, reported The Blaze.

House Speaker Paul Ryan spoke in the House chamber following the shooting. We are all horrified by this dreadful attack on our friends and on our colleagues and those who serve and protect this capital. We are all praying for those who are attacked and for their families, he said.

Earlier Thursday morning, Ryan also tweeted that the time to pray for the victims of the shooting has not passed.

The Hill posted a video of Senate Chaplain Barry Black offering a prayer in which he asked God to watch over those who had been affected by the shooting. Lord, surround our lawmakers with the shields of your protection and favor you know better than we what lies ahead for our lives. So, lead us like a gentle shepherd, he said in the clip.

According to CNN, President Trump visited Rep. Steven Scalise in the hospital. During the visit, Trump told Scalise that the prayers being offered in his behalf were innumerable. I want you to know that you have the prayers not only of the entire city behind you, but of an entire nation, and frankly the entire world. America is praying for you and America is praying for all of the victims of this terrible shooting.

Five churches in the Alexandria area have held prayer vigils for the victims, said the Washington Post.

The baseball game will continue tonight as planned. An unprecedented amount of tickets have been sold roughly 500 per hour with an expected $1 million raised from the purchases, said Roll Call. Rep. Mike Doyle of the Democrat team will be hosting a dinner next Wednesday for the Republican team in order that all may come together and reflect, reported CNN.
