Greater love has no one than this

Jesus said, “Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.”  During this Memorial Day weekend, we take the time to remember those who have given their lives for us.  I know that we, as a nation, have often debated the merits of a particular war.  The reasons for conflict have been many and varied.
But the truth of the matter is this. War is always a bad thing.  It should always be the last resort. There has never been a war that could be classified as good, because in every war human life is lost.  And that is always a tragedy.
And yet, we know that those who have made the ultimate sacrifice have made possible the freedoms we take for granted.  The fact that we can live where we wish, hold the jobs we want, worship as we would like (or not), and enjoy “the pursuit of happiness,” is due to the willingness of many who have chosen to put their lives on the line for our benefit.
We live in a great country. We have freedoms others do not have.  We have been blessed beyond what we deserve. And we owe a debt of gratitude to multiplied thousands who have given their lives so that our great land could continue to be what it is, “the land of the free and the home of the brave.”
Living as close as we do to two major military bases, we all know someone who is deployed right now.  Most of us know of someone who made that ultimate sacrifice.  And all of us benefit because of those willing to serve us.
May I simply say that we are grateful. Thank you to all who serve us so faithfully.  Thank you to the parents and spouses of those who serve.  We will continue to pray for safety, and we will pray that all of those who serve in the armed forces will soon be home.
And we also remember, and give thanks for, the One who gave His life for us some 2000 years ago.  Jesus understood what it means to lay down one’s life.  He died so that we might have life, too.  I am so glad that He loved me that much.  Because of His great sacrifice for me, I wish to live for Him.  I hope you will, too.
