Have faith in God as he does in us

I am currently preaching a series about being faithful on Sunday mornings.

What does it mean for a Christian to be faithful? What does it means for a church to be faithful?

Two verses are at the forefront of my mind as I speak on this topic. In 1 Corinthians 4:2 we read, "It is required of stewards that they be found faithful." And in 2 Timothy 2:13, Paul writes of God, "He remains faithful – for he cannot deny himself."

There are two aspects of faithfulness here. The most important is the truth about God.

God is always faithful. Even the name he revealed to Moses emphasizes that.

"I am who I am," means that God is steady. He does not change. That is not to say that he is like a stubborn old man who will not change his mind.

Rather because he is God, he does not need to change. We can count on him. He will never let us down.

And because of the faithfulness of God, we have been called to be faithful. When Paul wrote the above verse to the church at Corinth, he referred to himself (and by extension to all followers of Jesus) as stewards. Stewards take care of things that belong to others.

That is certainly true for us. Everything we have is a gift. That is true of our material goods, but it is also true of our talents.

God has created each of us with different passions and personalities. He wants us to use these gifts to bless others and to honor him.

God’s faithfulness is certain and sure. He will never leave us alone. Let us seek to be faithful to him, using what he has entrusted to us to make an impact on our world.
