Helping other equip saints with the word
pastor corner

As you read these words I am in Haiti. Today is my last full day there, as we will begin our journey home tomorrow. I was supposed to take this trip back in October, but Hurricane Matthew changed those plans.

This week, I have been teaching a group of pastors. We have started a school where we are seeking to provide a basic theological education for 11 pastors who serve in the area of Leogane in Haiti. This week I have taught a course on Bible interpretation, and another pastor has taught material from the four Gospels in the New Testament.

Preparing for this school has been an enjoyable experience for me, but has also reminded me of the many ways I am blessed. It is my intention to send two pastors at a time, four times a year, for a week at a time to teach the 11 enrolled pastors. We plan to offer instruction in the Bible, preaching and teaching, leadership and basic theology.

I had the privilege of meeting these pastors last June. I asked them what courses they thought would be most beneficial. Then I began to the process of developing a three-year curriculum, and I am now recruiting other stateside pastors to go and teach.

Again, I am humbled as I consider this process. Many years ago I was given the privilege of attending college and seminary and learning from some of the most intelligent and gifted of professors. While they did not teach me everything about the Bible, they helped me learn how to study the Bible more effectively for myself. I am better equipped today because of their great assistance.

Paul tells us in Ephesians that pastors exist to "equip the saints for the work of ministry." That is a reminder that serving the Lord is not for ministers only, but for every believer. God has called each of us to serve Him. My greatest task is to train and help others to find and use their gifts for him.

Here is the bottom line. If you are a follower of Christ, you have been called to serve. God has a job for you. Have you found it yet? Are you looking?

Let us all be found faithfully serving. God didn’t just call somebody else to do it. He’s calling you!
