Six ministers led scores of Hinesville residents in prayer on the old courthouse steps Thursday morning in observance of the National Day of Prayer.

Pastor Richard Hayes, president of United Ministerial Alliance of Liberty County, welcomed those attending, then offered his own prayer for the 64th annual event intended to be a time to “turn to God in prayer and meditation.” Following his invocation, Preshauna Reynolds of New Day Community Church sang the national anthem.

Other speakers included Pastor Alan Darsey of Restoration Church, who explained the meaning of “repent,” which means to turn around.

Pastor Dale Thornton of Hinesville First United Methodist Church offered a prayer for America’s men and women in uniform. Pastor Sherry Ferrell with True Worship Praise Center prayed for the community, its leaders, residents and first responders.

Pastor Robert Norwood of Hinesville First Seventh-day Adventist Church prayed for Liberty County schools, both faculty and students.

Prior to the last speaker’s prayer, Hayes invited elected leaders to the front. Pastor Kathy Paige of Immanuel Christian Center then offered her prayer for the event itself, for local and national leaders. The ceremony concluded with everyone singing “God Bless America.”

The National Day of Prayer was designated by Congress in 1952. It’s observed on the first Thursday in May.
