No better news

It does not take a lot to amaze me, but there are some things that do.

I am sitting at my desk listening to a radio station from Atlanta through my tablet.

That same tablet can be used as a portable TV while in the car.

I remember a time when we had to step out on the porch and adjust the TV antenna in order to watch a station from different cities (I grew up between Atlanta and Greenville, South Carolina).

And to be honest, I still don’t understand how television works. How is it possible to watch an event on a box when it is taking place across the country, or around the world?

Like I said, it’s not that hard to amaze me. But there is something else that amazes me more than anything in the world.

We sing about it often. It is the grace of God. I think sometimes about how prone I am to hold a grudge against someone who has wronged me. And then I recall how often I have done or said something that would grieve the heart of God.

How many times have I broken His commands? How many times have I spoken words that were hurtful?

Yet the Bible is clear. God’s love is evident because, "While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." That was Paul’s word to the Roman Christians. It’s not that God loves the good people in the world. No…He has chosen to love those who do not deserve His grace.

So many people today seem to think that they have earned God’s love. We aren’t all that bad. And yet…we all fall short of His glory.

Think of it this way. I might be better than you. You might be better than I am. But to compare ourselves to each other is to miss the point. It’s the same as arguing which of us is a better swimmer by trying to swim across the Atlantic Ocean. One of us may get farther than the other.

But we will both fail. In the same way we fall short of perfect obedience.

And still, God loves us. There can be no better news.
