Local recording artist Donna Jackson performed in concert Sunday evening at the Fleming Baptist Church in Fleming.
“She is a lovely person and a wonderful singer,” said Maude Thomson, the church’s secretary. “She came and sang at a mother/daughter tea we had at the church, and we really enjoyed her. She is pretty well known throughout the community.”
Jackson, a Rincon native, is the daughter of Tom and Faye Jackson of Midway. She lives in Midway and has three children, Phillip, Brooke and David. Occasionally, the children join her in concert.
Jackson is no novice to singing. At 5, she began singing in her grandmother’s church in Savannah. As a teenager, Jackson wrote and sang her own music while learning to play the piano.
She has overcome many obstacles in her life and sometimes sings about her past experiences. Her new album “Rescue Me” includes 13 gospel songs and “The Star Spangled Banner.”
Jackson has performed the National Anthem for 3rd ID soldiers and their families at Fort Stewart, at baseball games, karate tournaments and other special events.
Her current single, also titled “Rescue Me,” is getting national airplay and garnering some attention.
Another one of Jackson’s songs, “Pastor’s Song,” was featured on radio stations nationwide and aired on television in South Georgia.
Since launching her career, Jackson has sung before church congregations and audiences across the nation and in Canada. She appeared on the Trinity Broadcast Network, the Inspiration Network and several local television and radio stations.
In addition to being an accomplished song writer and psalmist, Jackson has been involved in martial arts for more than
23 years. She is involved at the national level and serves as an official judge for the National Belt League World Karate Games.
