I have to admit that I love to sing. I sing along with the radio in the car. I sing in the shower. I sing as I work. (I’m not a good whistler, so I can’t follow the advice of the Seven Dwarfs).
I usually have some music playing in the background in my office or car. I simply love music. It probably doesn’t hurt that I’m married to a music teacher.
As a Christian, I am convinced that music is a gift from God. He has commanded us to sing in worship and praise. Many people consider the Bible and the hymnbook to be the two most important books of our faith.
Now, I am aware that many churches no longer use hymnbooks, but that is not the point. They all are singing in some way or another.
Music is important in many areas of life. This weekend, we will hear patriotic music at concerts, on the radio and on the TV.
During the Christmas season, we will be serenaded by a variety of songs of the season. And even throughout the year, we all know the power of a love song. Music has the power to affect our lives.
As a Christian pastor, I want to encourage you to sing to the Lord. Throughout the Psalms, there are calls to sing. Psalm 100:2 says, “Come before him with joyful songs.” Psalm 101:1 say, I will sing of your love…” Psalm 147:1 says, “How good it is to sing praises to our God.” And of course, Psalm 33:3 says, “Sing to the Lord a new song.” Paul chimed in on this thought in his letter to the Ephesians: “Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord…”
We all see that God has called us to sing and offer praise to him. May I encourage you to do something tomorrow as you gather with other believers in worship? (I am taking for granted that you will do this.) When invited to stand and sing, do so with all your might. You might surprise those around you.
But I assure you of this. As you join with others to worship the Lord, it will make a difference in your life. It will make an impact on your church. God will be honored, and you will be blessed. Try it and see.
Sing to the Lord with all your might
