What are the certain things in life?

Did you celebrate Wednesday?
What, you didn’t know about the holiday? It was tax day. Notice I did not capitalize that. That is not quite up there on my list with Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter or Independence Day. But it is a day that we remember.
They say the only two things that are certain are death and taxes, and sometimes we wonder which one hurts the most. The truth is that none of us enjoys paying taxes. But we do enjoy riding on good streets, the protection of police and fire departments, and the privilege of good schools.
Let’s return to that thought about the things in life that are certain. Are we sure that death and taxes are the only two things that fit into that category? In fact, when I read the Bible, I discover that there is something else there.
“It is appointed unto man once to die, and after that the judgment.” Did you get that? The Bible indicates that judgment is as certain and sure and death and taxes. That’s not a very popular message in today’s world. I don’t know how many times I have heard it said that God is love, and that is definitely the case. The Bible speaks often about the marvelous love of God.
But the Bible also says that we are to be held accountable by this God of love. After all, does that not just make sense? My dad loved me (and still does). Of that, I have no doubt; he’s made it clear in so many ways. But when I was young and lived at home, I answered to the man. If I stepped out of line, he would hold me accountable. The consequences could be major.
God does the same for us. Those of us who are his children will answer for our sins. And those who reject his grace will certainly answer for theirs. Are you ready to meet your maker? I pray that you are, or that you will make those preparations now.
There will come a day when you stand before the God of all creation. You need to be sure that you are ready.
